Ive owned several editions of the Joy hardcover books over the years; and have been using the app for close to a year now. The app is everything Ive come to expect from the hardcover books, and more.
The first thing youll notice is a beautiful layout and navigation. As with the hardcover books, recipes are grouped, with a section introducing new techniques, or basic information. In the app, all the recipes link back to this information, so theres no more flipping back and forth.
The app also adds a menu planner, simply add recipes to your menu as youre browsing, then you can easily flip between recipes on your menu while youre cooking. Recipes include timers and steps so that you can keep track of where you are when preparing multiple recipes at a time.
Each recipe also includes ingredients you can add to a shopping cart, which is then organised by grocery store aisle. This feature is much more useful with the recently added support for iPhones.
Finally, each recipe includes a section for notes. I use it to record any tweaks I would make to a recipe.
A few things I would love to see in future updates include:
- A log of when Ive used a recipe, how it turned out, and what guests were present. I could use the recipe notes for this, but finding all the recipes I used on a particular day would be impossible.
- Being able to add my own recipes. While there are thousands of recipes includes in the cookbook, occasionally I like to use a recipe that isnt in there, and being able to use the apps ingredients list for shopping, and menu planner and timers for cooking would be fantastic.
Overall, the recipes alone make this app a fantastic value; the menu planner, timers, and shopping list make this app an invaluable tool in the kitchen.
