Joy of Cooking App Reviews

The Joy of Cooking has been an essential book to have for every cook, now this app is too!

What a great job joy of cooking is my modern version of my moms favorite cook book! I love the voice command feature (my moms book is so dirty from all the use!) This book and app are essential to anyone who wants learn to cook or perfect their skills. I learn something new every time I open this! The only thing that I can think of to improve the app is the ability to easily export recipes to other apps like paprika which I use for all of my current recipe collection, and grocery list. When I am at the store it would be nice to not have to switch between apps for my shopping list. Currently to import into paprika I have to email it to myself. Copy the text. Paste it into paprika. Then separate out what I have copied. Or attempt to find the recipe online. And copy from there. But all in all it would be amazing and time saving to just export with everything perfectly done.

No longer working!

Pretty photos for selecting recipes, unable to "search," rendering app utterly useless to me.

I wont delete

1951 joy of cooking is great . These Bowdlerized ethnic things and laughable nutritional advice are a waste of space . Nice as a searchable resource for occasional use . 1951 would be better .

No Joy using joy of cooking

The content is all there and the app has the potential to be great. But the app is laggy--slow to start up, laggy to navigate and scrolling in the splash screen is frankly unusable-must touch select (scrolling within a recipe is better once content loads). Overall nothing like the fluid screen scrolls and navigation snappiness that is characteristic of all the native and 3rd party iOS apps I use. Im on iPhone 6s--so I know its not my hardware. This poor performance persists after device restart, app reinstall etc... Im left to think the coding could be improved. Wouldnt have spent the 8 bucks if I had known--the Internet would have been just fine. Maybe this can save someone else a few bucks. Developer, please fix!

Great cookbook and reference

Wonderful app. Lots of good recipes, articles and photos to help improve the skills of both beginner and experienced cooks. I use this on an ipad with ios 9 and have had no problems. Definitely recommend.

Outstanding translation from print to app

No, its not the snappiest, but it does contain a LOT of wisdom of the ages. Very searchable, easy to change serving quantities, provides multiple timers. I bought this because my hands cant handle the hardback any more, and I am one happy camper.

So much love

This is my go to cook book in my right pocket! Its fast, keeps me organized and it works! Such a great app. Ty ty ty

Love it

This is hand down the best recipe/ food app, hand down. I am a chef, so I enjoy all the info this app provides about what you are cooking. Very educational and useful, especially for those of you that are not a professional chef. I have always thought of the Joy Of Cooking book was, and still is the kitchen bible. Great Job on the app. By the way I use this app on the iPad Air 2. Again, Great job!

Excellent Cookbook & App!

I am absolutely loving this on my iPhone 6s Plus! Love the navigation and search feature! I see myself using this all the time now! Thanks for the development & review effort! It shows!

Great reference. Good app. Worth it for me.

The app works fine for me. Go to the search bar, type the name of a food, and pick among alternatives. That simple. Im a longtime user of The Book. Good to have it in an app (though Ill keep the dead tree version if for nothing else than sentimental reasons, with the red ribbon marking "rolled biscuits"). This is just the basics, folks. Maybe not gourmet cooking. Yer $100-per-plate chefs might turn up their danged noses. For *those* recipes, go look elsewhere.

No content transfer

The content is great. Not as comprehensive as the actual book, but very extensive nonetheless. The only major problem is that the notes, bookmarks, and favorites do not transfer. So, when I upgraded my iPhone, I lost all my JoC personalized content from my previous device.

Future of cookbooks

Best recipe app I have ever used. Well thought through, practical (search, shopping list, notes, favorites, built in timers in recipes etc etc) and most importantly top recipes at your fingertips. Great job bringing iconic cookbook into modern world!!!

Beware: Not Identical to the Book

I waited eagerly for years for a digital copy of my trusted Joy of Cooking cookbook. Mine is literally coming apart from years of use. My initial "joy" at the release of this app quickly turned to disappointment when I realized many of the recipes I use are not the same as the hard copy book versions. Sometimes theyre significantly different. No matter how much I might like the app, I cant give a positive review to an app that promises one thing, but delivers another. Ill give 2 stars because the app is visually-pleasing to look at, but thats the best I can do. Ill update my review if they ever correct the recipes so the digital and print versions match.

Recipes not the same as my books

I was sad to find that this is not a direct substitution for my print copies of Joy. I came to find out that some of the recipes are significantly different. Some are so different that they are not the same dish. It is a good app but does not meet my expectations or have my trust. Update: the differences are because of the changes to the 75th anniversary edition. Since I dont use that one as my primary copy, there are problems. I am not partial to the latest edition.

Beware of the timers!

Overall, I really like this app. Its easy to use, and I love being able to look things up and bookmark them no matter where I am. Yes, its basic as a cookbook, as Joy has always been - but thats why I love it and keep using it. Its a reference for me. There are even built-in timers, which is lovely: just tap on the little clocks embedded at appropriate spots in the recipes or instructions, make sure it shows the timing you want when there is a range given, and tap to start. Theoretically at least, you could be running a couple at one time, which would be great when doing more than one thing at a time, although I havent tested this. *****Those timers are why Ive removed a star, though, because they *stop running* if you do anything else with your phone!***** For real! I just about died when I saw that. It was only by sheer dumb luck that I was able to salvage my ahi this evening because of this, and didnt burn down my kitchen. Its overcooked and definitely not rare as I was aiming for, but is at least still reasonably edible, so at least I dont have to go out. This is really unacceptable and so disappointing, though. This is not a cheap app as iPhone apps go, and with how much we use our phones for these days, it is utterly unreasonable to have to *not* do anything else with them while cooking so the timers will work.

Disappointed

Wished the app came with nutritional information. With so many people looking for healthy eating help, you would think this would be an automatic thing that would be included. Since cooking apps are a dime a dozen, move along and dont waste your time. There are better apps out there.
